If you have a plastic retainer, which is also known as a clear retainer, then you need to care for it regularly so it can stay in tip-top shape and keep your teeth straight and beautiful. Now, our orthodontic team understands that might be a tough task if you’re not sure what to do. So, to help you, our orthodontist, Dr. William B. Hentosz, is happy to share the instructions you need.

-Rinse your retainer multiple times a day. In fact, it’s best to rinse it with warm water each time you take it out of the mouth. This can be helpful because it can wash away bacteria and plaque that form on the appliance quickly.

-Clean your retainer daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive or microbial toothpaste. All you need to do is scrub the appliance after you brush your teeth and then rinse the retainer clean with cool water.

-Keep your retainer in its case as well as in a safe place when it’s not in your mouth. This can help you avoid losing or damaging it, which is helpful because retainers can be costly to replace.
