If you have an orthodontic emergency, call our office and explain the problem to our orthodontist or team. You may need to schedule an appointment with us right away or you may be able to do something to alleviate the problem until your next scheduled visit. Dr. William B. Hentosz and our skilled team will know what help you need and when you need it.

Loose Bracket
Brackets, the ceramic or metal pieces that are attached to the front of each tooth, can become weak or break if you chew something hard or sticky. This can cause the bracket to come loose and poke into your cheek, gums, or tongue. Putting orthodontic wax over the bracket can keep it from poking the inside of your mouth. This will make things more comfortable until you visit Dr. William B. Hentosz.

Broken or Protruding Wire
If a wire sticks out or becomes damaged, it can hurt your gums, tongue, or cheek. You may use a pencil eraser to push the wire back into position. If the wire will not move to a comfortable position, put a piece of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire. Do not cut the wire, as the piece of wire can be accidentally swallowed or inhaled. If a protruding wire has caused a sore, rinse your mouth with an antiseptic rinse or with warm salt water. This will clean the area and reduce discomfort.
